Individuals with Disabilities Act -Part B

Los Lunas Schools follow all regulations established in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)-B. There are approximately 1,365 students aged 3 to 22 with IEPs in the Los Lunas Schools. in the state of New Mexico students who are gifted qualify for individualized Education Plans.

Each school site has an IEP Facilitator(s) to ensure all IEPs are compliant for our students with disabilities. IEP Facilitators are also responsible for scheduling IEP meetings and facilitating IEP meetings. All IEP Facilitators and their assigned school sites and phone numbers are listed on the side bar. Los Lunas Schools also has a Transition Specialist to support our secondary students with their transition to post secondary life.

Individualized Education Plan (IEPs) meetings mostly occur at school sites. Meetings must occur at least annually but may occur more often depending on the child's educational needs as identified in the IEP. Parents are encouraged to contact their child's school with any questions regarding their child's IEP and if necessary schedule an IEP meeting. The Los Lunas School District can also request IEP meetings when a child's educational plan needs to be reviewed and/or changed. Los Lunas Schools is dedicated to working with families to ensure a child receives all services determined in there IEP.

Under the IDEA students can qualify for services ranging from speech therapy to academic support in the special education classroom for the majority of the school day. Services are determined by the IEP Team and are based on the student meeting criteria for the services and also demonstrating the need for services. There are thirteen disabilities categories a student may be eligible for services. The categories are listed below:

  • Autism
  • Deaf-blindness
  • Developmental Delay
  • Emotional Disturbance
  • Hearing Impairment, including deafness
  • Intellectual Disability
  • Multiple Disabilities
  • Orthopedic Impairment
  • Other Health Impairment
  • Specific Learning Disability
  • Speech or Language Impairment
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Visual Impairment (including blindness)

Los Lunas Schools provides the following related services for our students who meet criteria and demonstrate a need for services:

  • Recreation Therapy
  • School Nurse Services
  • School Psychology
  • Social Work
  • Speech Language Pathology
  • Teacher of the Visually Impaired
  • Transportation

Parents are highly encouraged to attend their child's Individualized Education Plan meetings. Once a student turns 18 and continues to have an IEP, the adult student can make all educational decisions regarding their IEP unless a parent has obtained educational guardianship or legal guardianship for the adult student.
